IB Curriculum at A.C. Flora

The IB Diploma Programme Curriculum

The curriculum is made up of the DP core and six subject groups.

The three core elements are:

  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): students reflect on the nature of knowledge
  • The extended essay: a 4000-word research paper
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): a program that develops the whole student

The six subject areas are:

  • Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature
  • Group 2: Language Acquisition
  • Group 3: Individuals and Societies
  • Group 4: Sciences
  • Group 5: Mathematics
  • Group 6: The Arts

IB Diploma Programme students must choose one subject from each of the five groups (1 to 5), ensuring breadth of knowledge and understanding in English, a world language, the social sciences, experimental sciences, and mathematics. Students must also choose either an arts subject from group 6, or a second subject from groups 2 through 5.

What is the theory of knowledge (TOK) course?

  • TOK encourages students to think about knowledge, to reflect on the process of learning in all their subjects, and to see and understand the connections between them.

What is Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)?

  • As the name suggests, CAS engages students in experiences that focus on three areas: creativity, activity and service. Students are encouraged to undertake experiences that interest them and help them develop areas of the IB learner profile.  Over the course of study, students also complete a CAS project.
  • For more information, please click the HERE to read the CAS Student Guide.

What is the extended essay (EE)?

The extended essay is the result of independent research on a topic chosen by the student in consultation with a supervisor in the school.  Students work approximately 40 hours to produce a formal piece of sustained academic writing containing no more than 4,000 words.  At the end of the EE process, students turn in their work to the IB to be graded.
